there is no place of manufacturing on the product

Q: Do you need to run water through these before first use?

Yes, rinse any filter. Rinse before installing and also after. Every single carbon block filter will shed carbon, almost all of it right up front. If you doubt, look at a (clean) glass of water out in the sunlight before rinsing. One is supposed to BUY a filter, not BE a filter.

Q: Is the opening at the bottom and top the same?

Yes, with rubber gasket on each end.
