Q: Can replacement fish be purchased, or at least additional clips for other toys to be mounted?

Don't know. I didn't like the product and gave it away. It's not at all like the cat fishing pole I had back in the 80s. That one, had a reel which I could reel in the toy (a gummi worm). This one doesn't really propel the toy far enough and was, in my opinion, flimsy and a poor purchase. I don't recommend it whether or not you can get replacement fish.

Q: how long is the string?

Don't buy this toy!!!! It will break before you ever find out how long the string is. Go to a sporting good store, buy a Barbie or ninja turtle children's fishing rod, tie the cat toy to the string. It will NEVER break, unlike this thing which did not survive ONE cast.
