Great new blend
Great new flavor from the ultimate dark coffee. I've been driving death wish a few years now and got this one to switch it up. I love it. It's string, dark, and smooth.

Highly recommend! ***BONUS*** The way to make the optimal buffered water for coffee brewing!
The Valhalla Java beans arrived today and, being a coffee lover, I immediately ground a few scoops and brewed a cup. My first reaction: I really like this coffee!A few notes:- I hand grind using a ceramic burr grinder- usually I grind only enough for 2 days at most to maximize freshness of the coffee- remaining ground coffee is stored in an airtight glass container- beans are stored in a sealed canister with a CO2 release valve- the coffee is brewed using a Keurig machine with Deli-bru reusable K-cups and filters, set on smallest cup size- I use only optimal water for coffee brewing *(see below)I like the Keurig brewer because it’s fast, easy to keep clean, and makes one cup at a time (I am the only coffee drinker in the house). I was using K-cups until earlier this year when I decided life is too short to drink bad coffee and set out to find a way to make a great cup using the Keurig machine. Thus the water* (again, see below), the burr grinder, canister, etc.Coffee purists will likely chime in to say if I want good coffee I should abandon the Keurig and use [insert favorite method here], but too bad— I’m not giving up the Keurig. I set out to find a way to make great coffee using this method and I’m sticking to it!Coffee I have tried (all whole bean) in order:1- Don Pablo Subtle Earth Organic Gourmet Dark Roast: I liked the price but the coffee was too mild in flavor. Even after experimenting with the grind I couldn’t make a strong enough flavor to enjoy. Those who prefer milder, a bit floral flavored coffee will probably like this. If you like coffee served at Starbucks (like Pike Place) this will be far too weak for you, as it was for me.2- Koffee Kult Dark Roast: Better but still too mild flavored for me. I can’t get it strong enough for my liking using my brewing method.3- Valhalla Java: Makes a really satisfying cup! I’m sold! That said, it’s pretty pricey at $1.33/oz. but I started out to find a way to enjoy great coffee using my method since life’s too short to drink crappy coffee, so I may have to just suck it up and shell out.Overall, I strongly recommend Valhalla Java. It’s the best by a long way of the coffee I’ve tried in my home brewing quest.I hope you enjoyed this review!* Using tap water is a common culprit when it comes to lousy coffee. It’s easy to make the optimal water for brewing coffee. You’ll need a gram scale and the following from the grocery store:- distilled water- epsom salt (try the pharmacy if the grocery doesn’t carry it)- baking sodaAdd .75 grams of epsom salt and .26 grams of baking soda to one gallon of distilled water. That’s it! You’ve made the ideal water for coffee!

Expect a big crash!
I have previously purchased the types of coffee brands that promise elevated levels of caffeine. When I do enjoy them, I get similar experiences to that of drinking this Valhalla Java by Death Wish Coffee. While I have no scientific data to provide that supports this is a normal experience, I can at least relay to you my reaction and anticipate it will mirror your own.Firstly, I did receive a fresh dated package from Amazon. I opened it right away and poured it into an air-tight canister. The beans had a nice fresh, though not overwhelming scent.Upon grinding and brewing in my Technivorm, I tasted my first cup. It was smooth, as others had reported. No acidity or bitter taste. I could definitely sense that this was bold. Has a very nice flavor on par with some of the best brands I have tried. As far as giving a jolt, this coffee really doesn't. That's not to say that there isn't an escalated amount of caffeine here. It's just that my reaction is different from this coffee over others. No jitters or internal heart pounding whatsoever. Instead, a heightened sense of alert with more calmness. What I do notice is a huge crash hours later -- to the point that I feel very groggy and my head starts to hurt a little. It's as if my brain is craving for caffeine. I don't get that type of reaction when drinking regular coffee whereas I come off the caffeine in a more subtle manner.I don't know whether to consider this type of reaction a plus or minus. I mean, you get a great tasting cup of coffee that is right up there with the better available brands. You do get a nice caffeine rush free of jitters. I think the negative is the crash and burn that comes later down the road.Your reaction may vary, but enjoy a delicious cup and see for yourself.
