Q: We have a 40" square table. We don't need the cover to lap over the sides. Could we remove the elastic from the corners to allow the cloth to be flat?

You can remove the elastic band from the edge to lay flat on the 40"x40" squared table, but the material is light so it might be slippery--you may need to use something to fix it to the table.

Among our 3 sizes (40" Square, 52" Round, 70" Round), 70" Round is the only one that is big enough for your 44" square table. However, it will be a bit loose.

Q: Can fit a 54" round table?

No, it can't. The fabric itself is 52" Round but with the rubber band, it can only fit 35"-50" Round, Hexagon or Octagonal Tables.

Covers the table, grips it and won't slip off.

Poor fabric quality

The material was very poorly made for being a cover to play card game so I need to find a better quality felt

Needed a table cover for bridge games

While the cover fit the table, after the first use it pelled up quite a bit and became unpleasant to use. I bought 2 of these and only used them once each. Would not recommend. There are other products out there that are much better but do cost more.

Poor quality

Only used the felt cover one time as we played cards on the table. After one use it is already "pilling" significantly. So much so it will probably be useable after 3-5 uses. Worthless product.
